Expanding Awareness
I’m taking part in a cohort on expanding awareness (more about that in another note), and the way the instructor tries to separate the definition of awareness from attention is as follows (paraphrased):
- Attention: Where your senses are pointed towards in a given moment. Could be to a particular sound, the sensation of your breathing while meditating, or a conversation with a friend.
- Awareness: The space in which your attention can move. The elements that your attention can go towards.
I was familiar with this concept before, but this had been the first time accepting it felt simple and true.
The truth in which this cohort operates is that awareness, as a craft, can be trained. It has invited a few fun explorations in thoughts and senses. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn.
I’m trying not to take notes or articulate much of what I have been experiencing because it seems this learning flows well when left at an experiential level, and trying to label its parts may lead me to misinterpret their names.
So for now, I will leave this note with this bit of a vague share. Hehehe.
